Never played the old one. "Flat" is in so the current UI is somewhat trendy and minimalist. I think it will come around again, what's old is new.
My biggest issue with the game is the windows on windows bit. This is actually Windows 286 thinking the way the data is presented now.
If I can get a token for UI change, I'd like to use it to redesign the windows, combining data from some of the current ones into single ones. The chat UI needs some love, and the people/places/probe window is just a mess.
Being able to have multiple 'configurations' would be good too so you can prioritize what you are doing in different configs, but that speaks to being a bit more customization than it has now.

The windows seem pretty minimalistic to me and I don't argue about the UI ... ... because you'd probably be right ... ... soooooooo ....... ... I'm curious what you can come up with?
So am I!!! LOL!
Really, all UI comes down to preference.
That's why the Overview is really awesome in that you can pick and choose what's on each tab and how many tabs there are in use. If the different 'elements' of the UI could be done in the same way, with different configuration files you could load, it would be completely awesome.
Instead of piles of windows, think fixed frames. You pick how the screen 'looks' with the frames and what's in them, along with their various sizes. Then you could share the config files, almost like theme files, and the best ones would get massive shares... almost like ship fittings.
You really have two types of data on the UI: Active and Passive. Active being stuff you need to see 'right now' or always. Passive is stuff you use to look something up or do when you're docked or not doing anything at serious risk. Those two concepts alone should dictate what you see and how you see it. So your 'space' config could be completely different from your 'docked' config.
Things like Dscan and Overview show almost identical data and that's normally a indicator of something that could be combined and made more concise.
Probes/Anomaly scanner is just bizzare since you have to bring up the big Map just to actually use probes. It's a 3D graphic 'mini-game' and pretty much a drain on the actual utility of it, especially those of us playing on a single monitor. Probes should be 'smarter' than that and you 'sick' them on a target. They should be able to be outfitted like a ship, made smarter or faster or more accurate. Then they feed you back information whenever they have it. Cheap probes might be able to get you a ship target in 10 minutes or WH in 5. Expensive or high end ones get you both in seconds if you have the right implants and the data is resolved in the Anomaly window. It also makes capturing and/or shooting a probe something of value so it should be allowed.
So you can combine UI clean up concepts with game play improvements as well. I'll put more thought into it and see if I can mock something up.
